Like many people I was not satisfied with the 10x turnover that people often recommend for reef newbies.  I could feel that my SPS were starving for extra flow.  I was constantly shopping around for a return pump.  I was going to have to add an external overflow box as my nano wasn't drilled, a return pump, a SCWD wave device and all the plumbing for it.  It was not only going to be a daunting task, but an expensive one.  Being short on money, I was hoping for a way out.

Building a Surface Skimmer or basicaly a small overflow for your nano tank is extremely easy.  It helps to skim off that oily residue that can build up on the surface of the water which lets more light in, more oxygen mixture and helps with the appearence of your tank.

Mazzei Protein Skimmer PDF Print E-mail
I'm the type of person that likes to tinker.  I thought I could build a pretty decent protein skimmer for my primarly SPS (small polyp stoney) reef aquarium for a decent price.  Now theres some pretty good skimmers on the market.  For example Euro-Reef and the new needle wheel knock offs, AquaC Skimmers, and other designs but if your reading this, it's probaly because you've seen the cost of these pieces of acrylic!
