Page 2 of 3 2. Parts needed and Assembly. For the business side of the skimmer, your going to need a Mazzei Injector. I went with the 384, mainly because I already had a Mag Danner 5 I was going to use. But of course that was the basis of my whole design. When you make your skimmer, I would suggest you take a look at how much room you have in your sump, and how much money you have to spend. A 2000 gph high head pump will do you no good if you only have 20" under your stand and a 6"x6" footprint. The other important aspect when looking at choosing a pump, is what kind of flow its designed for. Is it good at providing lots of flow with little back pressure? Or if there is some head weight, can it still provide good movement? That is the important part. I found after some experimenting that a higher head pump would work better. So for example some pumps like the velocity pumps come in high head, and low head versions, if possible, go for the high head even though you get less gph rating. Your going to need at least about 20" for the main body and collection cup. Something like 4" diameter acrylic or bigger. If I had a choice I'd probaly do a 6" diameter 22" body right now. Next you need some 2" acrylic tube for the neck, 3" acrylic tube to direct the skimmate back down into the cup. You'll also need 4 acrylic plates. One for the base, 2 to attach the neck to the body, and one for the base of the cup. I used a 4" pvc cap for collection cup cap, and a flange thing from the plumbing section of home depot. I also used 6 plastic screws and wingnuts to secure the top to the bottom of the skimmer. The plumbing parts I'll leave up to you but make sure you use a gate valve on the water exit to control height. A cheap ball valve will not give you enough control. Another cheap option that I based off the Euroreef design was just a U-pipe going back up. Do not glue this piece in, instead rotate it to the side. The water height in the chamber will be the same as the height of the exit in this case. As you can tell, I'm not the type to write down what I used or whatever. I believe DIY projects should be creative and a million ways to do the same thing.
