Picking a Powerhead PDF Print E-mail

Powerheads are an ideal way to add a little bit of flow to your tank, or to get some flow in a corner of a tank where water currently isn't reaching.  A reliable powerhead thats quiet, and easy to maintain is important though.  Because these guys get barried behind rocks, are a pain to clean, and the last thing anyone needs is extra heat and noise.

I've tried a bunch on the market, and this is what I think of these powerheads.

Maxijet These are by and far the most relied upon powerheads for reef and marine tanks. That should tell you something about their reliability and power consumption. These are the powerheads I use on my nano reef.

Hagen Quickfilters These are strong powerheads, and are very popular in freshwater tanks. I dont really like the quckfilter attachement as I find it clogs too easily and baby fish somehow get sucked into the quickfilter still.

ZooMed PowerSweeps These are absolutely unreliable in the reef tank. Most people who have tried them report failure within the first week. They also report that the volume of water output by these devices is very low. ZooMed released a new improved version, but the same results have been reported by aquarists with the new versions as well.
